Hailing from the Swiss capital of Bern, Naturetone pioneered Swiss hip-hop in the early 1990s as a founding member of ecologist hip-hop crew 3TP. After a 15 year studio hiatus, Naturetone returned in 2010 with Nihon, an tmospheric instrumental hip-hop album which paid tribute to, as the title implies, Japan.

The Orient is again a source of inspiration on Naturetone’s second coming. Turnings of the Sun is ignoring conventions and instead opting for atmosphere and discovery. Naturetone weaves melodies, sounds and beats into an intricate texture that becomes much more than a piece of music, Turnings of the Sun is a sonic experience. It feels like a stroll down an Asian market, bursting with life and activity and tickling the senses with flavors, odours, sounds and colours.

New Island Beatz Vol. 1 is the freshman effort from Providence artist/producer New Island. The tape features warm vocal samples and soulful music massaged into well-crafted digital soundscapes. Think 9th Wonder meets Flying Lotus, combining straight forward hip-hop with highly conceptual electronic music.
The album stands alone as an engaging, well-rounded musical effort, but several tracks cry out for proper treatment from the right rapper. That said, the tape ebbs and flows like the Providence River– a wondrous, naturally beautiful stretch of water that winds through one of America’s oldest industrial cities.

 

El Hefe and the People’s Ensemble-Beat Tape, Volume One​

Jeff Spec under the alias (El Hefe and the Peoples’ Ensemble)… Dropped a 14 instrumental tracks, streaming only (for now at least), and all beats that haven’t been used by anyone yet.  His plan is to release a new beat tape at least once a month this year, to let people hear his production in a raw format, in order to get some additional higher-profile placements.So be on the look out for his next beat steps.

 

 

Lyle Horowitz – Let Them Eat Cake (Instrumental LP)

“Let them eat cake” is the traditional translation of the French phrase “Qu’ils mangent de la brioche”, supposedly spoken by “a great princess” upon learning that the peasants had no bread. Since brioche was enriched, as opposed to normal bread, the quote supposedly reflects the princess’s obliviousness to the condition of the people.

Let Them Eat Cake is also an album that Lyle Horowitz has been working on (and off) since December. The album is inspired by the last 20 years of 18th Century France as well as the uncertain economic and political landscape of the present times. While mostly instrumental, the album features guest spots from  Adam Warlock, Dieter Schaaf, Melvin Burch and PreZZure — who appears on “Message From A Friend”, the next single off of our collaborative album, The Woodside Boys, which drops this Halloween on RockTheDub.com.
